This is a picture of Frenchtown School in Clark County, Wisconsin. It looks just like the one I attended, so it may be the same building. (It was called the Clark School when David and I went to it.) They moved the building after we moved to Maple Hurst – though I’m not sure where they moved it to.
I was six in April and started school in September. We had moved to the River Bottom that year. I walked the four miles to the Clark School with David. Our folks took us when the weather was nasty. It was only about a two mile walk once the river froze up.
The school was big for then. It had two rooms and a full basement. The teacher was Miss Hill. She was eighteen or nineteen. She rented a room from one of the local families. She ended up marrying one of her graduating eighth graders, who was seventeen or eighteen.
